Thassos  History

 According to mythology , the first person to inhabit the island was Thassos,the son of King Aginoras. Zeus was deeply in love with Thassos sister Europe, that he kidnapped her to enjoy her company for ever. So the father King of the phoenicians, Aginoras send his sons out to find Europe. Thassos found the magical and beautyful island, forgot about his plans, stood on the island and gave it his name Thassos. Herodot said that he was secuded by the beauty of the island.This still happens today and many people, who only come here to rest or holiday fall in love with Thassos and stay.

Thassos is known to those who have already discovered its beauty, as the jewel of the Aegean, the emerald island.

It is the most northerly island in the Aegean Sea, located just 12 nautical miles away from the ports of Kavala and Nea Peramos and 6 nautical miles from Keramoti and the Nestos  Revier Delta.

It is mountainous and densely wooded. The lower slopes of the mountains, covered by pine forests and olive groves seem to tumble into the sea, around the perimeter of 100 km of the beautiful coastline of the island, with a noumerous beaches, inlets and astuaries. It has wide sweeping big sandy expanses of beach, smaller sandy bays tiny coves with rocks and pebbles, beaches which just constitute the fine white powdery marble sand which is like talcum powder and even rocky outcrops, were one can be as secluded or with friends as one wishes. The climate is a mild Mediterranean climate, with short mild winters.

The Anthos Apartments are situated in the capitol Limenas Thassos town. From here you can travel around the island by bus, ship ( EROS II ) or hire a car, bike scooter, buggy or bicycle.

You also have the option of exploring the mainland, which include the regional capitol Kavala with its byzantic castle, Philipi where Brutus was defeated by Marc Antony and a little later St. Paul settled here to convert the europeans to christianity. The Nestos River Delta with its natural beauty is near to Keramoti, just across the water.
